Deekline & Wizard - Back Up, Coming Through
Submitted by Belinda Roberts 08/06/2009

Well it’s breaks kids… though perhaps not quite as we’ve come to know it from this dynamic duo. This is the second album for Deekline & Wizard (aka Nick Annand and Greg Fleming), following on from their debut album Breaks, Beats & Blondes back in 2004. Although the album is not particularly original, it deviates from stock-standard breakbeat; taking a trip through the territories of souful vocals, funky house and hip-hop, which come together nicely to form a well-produced, if somewhat surprising package.

Collaborations and contributions abound on this album with the ever popular Yolanda lending her vocal styling right through, along with notable appearances from DJ Assault and MC Navigator.  There has never been any doubt that this heavyweight duo are more than capable of producing their fair share of dance floor smashes and Back Up, Coming Through certainly features a few of those. From the fired up “Ready For Your Love”, to the already much-loved “Handz up”, the guitar-licked and rap-laced “Dancehall Thrilla” and heavy beats and Spanish influenced “Baila Baila”, there is a more than enough to get feet moving.

And then there are the deviations, the little surprises that show that this pair is about more than just booty bass. “One In The Front”, though already familiar to many has this time been produced as a toe-tapping fast paced hip-hop number. Perhaps the two most surprising inclusions on the album are “Fire” and “Angels” – both featuring vocals from Yolanda and Vic. Quite unlike anything we’ve come to expect from Deekline & Wizard, both tracks have a distinct 70’s funk feel to them – heavy on the vocals, horns and sax.

Though it remains to be seen how this album will be received by fans of their previous work, this latest offering from Deekline & Wizard is definitely worth a listen.
