Who Made Who - The Plot
Submitted by Tim Williamson 20/05/2009

The triumvirate of talented Danes who make up Who Made Who have an impressive pedigree. Individually, their previous carnations have seen them involved in various Scandinavian groups including Röyksopp as well as collaborating with members from New York’s experimental jazz group, The Lounge Lizards.

With their forces combined they produce a sound consisting of indie rock, disco and dance punk; with a lot of riff driven synths marrying the three.

This sound has appealed to the likes of Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age who covered "Space To Rent" from their debut album and Hot Chip who have remixed "The Plot" from this release.

Given the list of associates and the band’s penchant for dressing up as guitar-wielding skeletons on stage, it was surprising to find a number of quality down tempo tracks. One such track is “Keep Me In My Plane” which encapsulates the experience of smooth cruising at altitude, the dreamy lyrics make for a first class relaxation experience.

“TV Friend” is the opening track and is supported by Kraftwerk-esque vocals throughout, perhaps not the most inventive thing for an experimental group. The title track “The Plot” takes things up a beat and it’s not hard to see why Hot Chip asked to remix it. “Motown Bizarre” has an infectious riff that reminded me of the group’s performance at Future Music Festival last year; no doubt the track would work well live with more room to experiment as this single is short and sweet.

The playfully titled “Raveo” is made for the dance floor and is quite catching, while the concluding song “Working After Midnight” is a more low key number. The Plot finishes where it started, with big influences from earlier pioneers of electronica.

While the album provides an enjoyable listen and is genuinely entertaining at times, it will perhaps be better known for its remixes and live performances. By involving so many genres of music, the album unfortunately suffers from being the jack of all trades and the master of none (or few to be fair). Just as you find yourself enjoying a song it suddenly morphs into something else (e.g. “This Train”). I give The Plot 6.5/10.

For the music nerds: The name of this trio is coincidentally the title of an AC/DC album which was released as the soundtrack for the Steven King film, “Maximum Overdrive”.
