Boozoo Bajou - Grains
Submitted by Badr Fikree 12/05/2009

Boozoo Bajou’s latest offering, Grains comes at a time where the group was given the reins to really put out something they’ve wanted to do with relative freedom. Something we’ve seen artists do before and flourish, other times, fail miserably. This CD I’m afraid, is the latter of the two extremes.

I am not one to judge their previous work, but Boozoo Bajou, from what I understand, had taken a niche position in the market, providing dubs and breaks within their beats that really gave them a unique and atmospheric sound. It also gave them a following that would probably have me tarred and feathered after reading this review.

Should I go on? This airy artsy “bohemian bourgeois” approach for grains goes no where. There is no solid platform to this album which I feel, had the ability to stand out within a set format (beginning album, middle, end) and really pull it together. The tracks are placed funny, the vocals are terrible and the worst thing is; it’s fucking boring.  I can’t even list a few tracks for you to try listening to. Mainly because you are more likely to hear it in an elevator sometime soon at a ritzy hotel, while you scoff your martini’s and talk about how conceptual art and the smell of your own farts changed the world for the better. In which case, buy the album and along with your op-shop clothing and “vintage” red handbag your grandma gave you from the 80’s (and this is only the blokes I’m talking about), you would fit in well with this dribble.

The deeply atmospheric and seemingly well thought out album this is meant to be, left me feeling like it was a waste of time. If it’s any indication of what the group sounds like on their other records, count me out. I’d rather listen to nothing.
