Various - Ministry Of Sound Annual 2009
Submitted by Liz Sheehan 17/12/2009
Ministry of Sound Australia has again brought in the talents of its favourite sons, John Course and Goodwill, to mix the Australian Annual 2009.
The Annual albums usually predict the hits for the next year as well as including a few current popular tracks. Sometimes I find it hard to listen to the Annual albums when they are new.
I buy it, skip through each song, not liking anything in particular and then CD gets forgotten. That is; until I pull it out six months later and then find I love almost all of the tracks because I have been brainwashed during that time with the constant airplay they would have received over summer.
This Annual, however, is a little different with a nice mix of tracks from different eras!
On both CDs there is the now, the future and the old made new.
With several old tunes appearing as remixes on the album I wondered is there not enough new music being made?
Will the scenesters pick up old skool anthems like 'Engergy 52' by Cafe Del Mar and run around saying 'OMG I LOVE THIS NEW SONG BY MICHAEL WOODS' or will tracks like 'Infinity,' remixed by Guru Josh vs Perth's own Mind Electric, give the new comers to the dance music scene an appreciation of where this great music started from?
I am hoping it will be the appreciation they get and not ignorance.
I was glad to hear the remixes of these past songs were not complete abominations.
I still got the enjoyment of hearing the old tracks with their new twist. Shapeshifter have even rivived their classic - 'Lola's Theme' and you can't tell me you don't love the vocals on that track!
I found a huge difference in the style of John Course's mix over Goodwill's.
John Course's mix was a bit lumpy and the tracks didn't seem to mix smoothly into one another.
He still had a great selection of tracks to mix from all the usual suspects such as 'Open your heart' by Axwell & Dirty South, 'My Faya' by Fedde le Grand and 'Delirous' by David Guetta.
Other common MOS artists to feature in his mix are include Bob Sinclar, Martin Solveig, The Ian Carey Project and Erick Morillo.
The feel of John Course's mix was more aimed a day party, with the sun shining and the drinks flowing. Summadayze anyone?
Goodwill's mix was harder and reminded me more of a club set that you would spend all night dancing to.
Smooth mixes, peaks and finally coming down at the end with 'Paris is Burning' by Ladyhawke.
It appears Goodwill had a selection of the more current popular tracks such as 'When we were young' by Sneaky Sound System, 'Pjanoo' by Eric Prydz and 'Talk like that' by the Presets.
I'll have to say that I enjoyed Goodwill's disk the most but check in again with me in six months after attending the summer festivals, where no doubt alot of these tracks will feature and my preference may have changed.
If you want to hear a bit of the now, the future and the past, check out Ministry Of Sound Annual 2009!
