Various - Chronicles Of The Deep
Submitted by James Broadhurst 26/08/2008

If you are already aware of the Fokuz imprint, which is part of the Triple Vision Music Group that controls Citrus Recordings and Syndrome Audio, and the kind of music Fokuz is renowned for releasing chances are you already know about the Chronicles Of The Deep series.

The Chronicles Of The Deep CD is a compilation of the Chronicles series that were released as two LPs in November and December of 2007 so if you already own the LPs don’t bother with the CD.

With over 20 full-length tracks from over 20 producers covering all the usual subjects from deep to dancefloor and back again, Chronicles Of The Deep is a solid effort, but with so many tracks to choose from there are bound to be some good, some brilliant and, unfortunately, some not so good.

Some of the tunes on this album sound a little clichéd and generic and one gets the feeling putting out a double CD is a bit of a gimmick as this release would have made a similar impact if condensed onto a single CD.

Tracks like Atlantic Connection’s ‘Northside’ and Greeley, Camo & Tenchu’s ‘All 4 Me’ appear to lack the musicality a lot of the other tracks have, but perhaps hearing these tunes through a couple of 12” subs would persuade me otherwise.

In saying this, there are definitely more good tracks than bad on this album and some of the standout tracks on the latest Chronicles Of The Deep include Hobzee & Zyon Base’s gritty, amen driven roller ‘Blue Lotus,’ Lynx’s distinctively different ‘Counterpoint’ and the minimal, bass heavy ‘Smoke Signal’ by Well Being.

If you are a fan of the Chronicles series and missed out on the vinyl releases Chronicles Of The Deep is well worth the purchase price, but if you’re looking for groundbreaking drum and bass perhaps wait just a little longer.
