Rennie Pilgrem - Skin
Submitted by James Broadhurst 17/07/2008

Fans of breakbeat rejoice, one of nu-skool breakbeat’s most consistent performers has delivered a sensationally different approach to all things broken beat with Skin, Rennie Pilgrem’s latest artist album.

Upon receiving a promo copy of Rennie Pilgrem’s latest offerings I was understandably excited and with rock, big band brass and grunge influences throughout, Skin offers a unique and addictive interpretation of modern day breakbeat.

If you are familiar with Rennie’s Thursday Club Recordings, and the resulting TCR Allstars, then you will already be acquainted with this man’s style and flavour, but, in saying this, Skin is probably one his more adventurous exploits as it revisits his forays into the ‘live’ side of things.

The emotive grunge anthem ‘The Rich Rule Us’ grabs your attention and sucks you in from the very first beat with some awesome vocals from Ruth ‘Minuit’ Carr and some downright dirty guitars and synth lines.

Also included on Skin are perhaps two of Rennie’s biggest singles over the last 12 months, in Eraser and Drumma, which have both featured prominently in the cr ates of the biggest breaks DJs all over the globe.

Other highlights on the album include the irresistibly funky ‘Across 111th St’ featuring Larry Love, which sounds like A-Skillz on steroids, as well as the booty bass inspired ‘So Real,’ which could well be held responsible if 808 drum kits came back into fashion.

Overall, Rennie Pilgrem delivers some old school flavours in a brand new way and it is awesome to hear something as addictive as Skin from such a seasoned campaigner.

If you like your beats broken, buy it now!
