Moog Acid - Jean Jacques Perrey & Luke Vibert
Submitted by Matthew Perkins 7/10/2007

This is a rather curious pairing of a crazy old Frenchman into electronic pop - Perrey is nearly 80 and was experimenting with music technology some 50 years ago - and a trailblazing electronica artist from Cornwall - Vibert is an English 30 something and got into things via hip-hop and the UK rave scene of the late ‘80s.

The latter has put out releases on labels like Ninja Tune, Warp, Mo Wax, and Planet Mu while the former has worked with the likes of John Cage and Robert Moog. And therein lies the connection here – a love of the Moog synthesizer.

The instrument underpins what is a pretty disparate collection of sounds that winds its way from Perrey’s spoken word intro and some trip-hop beats, through some electro-pop and even a sitar-accompanied broken beat affair in ‘Dream 106.’

There’s the curious rendition of the French lullaby ‘Frere Jacques,’ a little drill ‘n’ bass action, and then some more chilled moments inspired by downbeat and techno sensibilities.

At times the end result is a little too off the wall without really pushing boundaries and without an overly engaging sound but on the whole it’s just a fun, slightly cute, outing into the meeting place of electronics and electronica that will be at least diverting for anyone with a taste for that part of the aural spectrum.
