Cookin' On 3 Burners – Baked Broiled and Fried
Submitted by Matthew Perkins 24/9/2007
Put together members of The Bamboos, True Live and Deode, and you can probably imagine what the resulting sounds will be like. Yep, damn funky.
Right from the go, Lance Ferguson, Ivan Khatchoyan and Jake Mason take proceedings to a proper soulful funk vibe, with syncopated drumming, gently pacing bass guitar and a stirring horn section.
There are also some nice Hammond Organ moments as well as tracks with gritty soulful vocals from both genders, with the superb ‘Kylie Auldist’ once again standing out. As does the amazingly catchy but nicely restrained cover of Gorilla’s ‘Feel Good Inc.’
However, moments of the album settle into easy grooves, making it wonderful accompaniment to any chilled event with the occasional dancefloor excursion, without being an overly astounding listen.
That said, if you like your soul grooves, this is well worth checking out.
