Camino Blue – Ten Short Stories
Submitted by Tim Fenner 1/7/2007
Camino Blue is a German label at the forefront of cutting edge, atmospheric and experimental drum and bass.
A collection of ambient, eclectic sounds so robust that they’re equally as appropriate in a chillout lounge as on a dancefloor.
Their latest release, Ten Short Stories, is a fun-filled fusion of low funky beats and hypnotic flowing chords sure to please anyone with an ear for the less abrasive drum and bass sounds.
This is the third compilation album for the label and it follows nicely in the footsteps of 2003’s The Adventures of Astral Pirates, and the 2006 digital release of Silver Cycles, in providing a broad blend of groundbreaking, intelligent and ambient drum and bass.
The album brings together a collection of respected artists from around Europe including the phenomenal Electrosoul System from Russia and the Future Engineers, a innovative Scottish production duo.
The blend of exciting up and coming artists with some of the scene’s most established producers is what gives this perceptive label such wide appeal.
The ten short tracks, or stories, that form this bold compilation are a credit to Camino Blue’s astute awareness of drum and bass in the 21st century.
This is a truly extraordinary compilation. Every track has, as the title suggests, a self-contained story to tell and its own place on the album. Each song takes the listener somewhere new, exciting and innovative.
Its not what one would expect from a drum and bass album and this is what makes this compilations so great.
The low pulsing warmth of B.Fuse’s ‘Time of Passion,’ and the uplifting electric vibe in Electrosoul System’s ‘Brainscan’ are well worth a listen, not to mention ‘Trajectories,’ the epic final track from revered UK junglists Pariah.
The track selection and ordering are such that this album ought to be listened right through, at least once. The noticeable lack of vocals is a factor that admittedly affects the overall feel of the album, but doesn’t detract from its ambient quality.
Although there are several dancefloor-specific tracks this album is a wise investment as a late-night background rinse or a chilled party soundtrack.
