Various Artists – Witness Future Vintage Vol. 2
Submitted by Matthew Perkins 10/5/2007
Only being around for a couple of years hasn’t stopped this Dutch label from getting a reputation as a reliable source of quality, soulful releases. They’ve carefully chosen each of their albums to fit within the realm of more down tempo electronic music that draws heavily on soul and jazz and they’ve done the same for the tracks on their second compilation of music they’re flagging as being the classics of tomorrow.
Taking in downbeat, modern soul, nu jazz of both the lighter and heavier varieties, and soul-drenched hip hop, this album sounds very much like the kind of thing usually given the endorsement of the likes of Gilles Peterson or Jazzanova. Indeed, anyone into the sounds they drop will love this album.
And, from The Doors reference and gentle rolling percussion of the opening track, through the dancefloor broken beats and twittering synths of West London, and on to Rich Medina’s melding of R&B and dirty soul later on, this is quality throughout and will be bliss for the ears of any fan of soulful dance music.
