DJ Vadim – The Soundcatcher
Submitted by Matthew Perkins 17/4/2007
Five years between albums is a fair ol’ time but it’s not like this fella has been slacking off… the DJ, member of a couple of groups, former Jazz Fudge Recordings head, remixer and, of course, producer has been working on his second solo long player in between other commitments and it’s a winner.
It lives up to its name, and is an eclectic collection of sounds that take in jazz, disco, reggae, and Latin that is anchored by a blunted, downbeat style. The Russian also throws in a little more variety with some touches of classical, blues, Southern rap, London grime, and even some Middle Eastern instrumental influences.
It’s essentially the kind of sound you’d expect from Vadim but with enough of a twist to make your ear sit up and take note. If you’re a fan of Vadim, his previous homes such as Ninja Tune, or just like hip hop with a twist (particularly a ragga one), then this is well worth a listen and, while it may not change the face of music, it should put a smile on yours and get your head nodding on a lazy morning-after or a chilled afternoon.
