Mistical - The Eleventh Hour
Submitted by Shothole 3/4/2007

Is Drum and bass in its final hour? that is the question put forward on the opening track from “three blokes who drink beer and moan a lot whilst occasionally making music” which is how Mistical describe themselves on there myspace page. It seems Mistical mite hold a slight grudge against the big track producers of today which can be heard in the title track and long player opener ‘The Eleventh Hour’, with their resident MC and one half of broken English MC DRS they have written a track that really tells the truth about a scene which is losing its integrity at an astounding pace.

With over a decade in the industry it’s surprising to think ‘The Eleventh Hour’ is a debut album for Mistical otherwise know individually as Calibre, Marcus Intalex, and ST Files, particularly considering the reputation they have within the scene and the amount of time they spend pushing their sound around the globe. That’s debatably why this project has taken so long to surface.

From beginning to end the trio demonstrate their love for pushing the sound that to them is the future sound of drum and bass, a sound that can stand up to the test of time, not just a dance floor, saying that the soaring ‘Time To Fly’ is sure to get any dance floor moving. Other highlights include ‘Memory Jog’, which demonstrates what the Mistical sound was built on, liquid funk at its finest, and the track 'Believe' looks to show the big names of today just how damaging a well detonated sub-bass can be. Another personal favourite is ‘City Life’ which again features a great vocal treatment from DRS who’s vocals accompanied with the rolling bass line set the track off on a rasta tip.

It is obvious that Mistical wanted to banish the cheesiness that has swamped the drum and bass genre in recent years, this is real, intelligent music – fluid, futuristic stuff with a soul and a beat-heavy body.

Rating: 11hrs out of 12!
