Amit - Never Ending LP

If you're into DnB with big drops and catchy leads this may not be the album for you. For a number of years Amit Komboj has established himself in DnB carving out his own niche of half time beats and dubwise soundscapes. With a proven track record of releases on Commercial Suicide, Metalheadz, and Function to name a few, and it was time for Amit to unleash his inner spirit and consciousness, reflected in his debut Album for Commercial Suicide Recordings.
Anybody familiar with his past work knows that his Asiatic background has a huge influence in his productions and this album is no different.
The stand out track from my point of view is Unholy. It’s darker and more sinister to what I’m used to hearing from him. If there’s any such thing as Half time tech then this would be as close as one would get. MK Ultra and Dirtbox are similar in dropping the eastern dub vibes for a more technoid sounding feel.
The only track without a halftime beat is Village Folks which had previously been released as a 12" single. Its a beautiful track with the sultry and haunting Hindu or Arabic like vocals which complement the tune well. The beats itself will be more familiar to DnB punters and much easier to relate to on the dancefloor.
At this stage one cant help but wonder if Amit, who strove to break free of the shackles of DnB production and dare to be different, is allowing himself to fall into a repetitive formula of his own? Unfortunately like the reputation his 12" releases have gotten, I can’t help but wonder whether Amit has reached the distance of his musical ideas and concepts. The rest of the album while still produced at a high standard and quality are all pretty much standard Amit tracks with not much adventure to stray from the path in which he has found success and is identified with.
In the end I couldn’t help but feel a little disappointed with the outcome of the album.....I wanted more, but it does enough to take one through a journey of mystical dub and heighten ones senses when listening at home. But Amit has never been one to strictly please the DnB massive. I would say more open minded people from other electronica genres could also find much appeal in this album.
