DJ Profile - Micah

If you’ve ever seen Micah play, it’s not hard to see why he’s won Perth’s Best Breaks DJ at the PDMA’s too many times to count. Micah has earned himself the reputation of one of Perth's leading DJs, through his ability to get even the coldest of feet on the dance floor through his energy and enthusiasm behind the decks. He has an amazing amount of talent for playing the hardest of break beats and Perth is blessed to have one such DJ entertaining them every weekend. If you’ve ever been or plan on going to Villa or Ambar, you’ll definitely be up dancing to a set from Micah!

1. Name?
Micah

2. Describe the style of music you play?
Good, energetic, fun, heart pumpin, dancefloor oriented, party people music

3. How long have you been DJ’ing for?
A few years.

4. If I took a look inside your fridge, what would I find?
Actually for the first time in a while food, and beer, and chocolate, and vino and cheese.

5. Tell me about cheese and honeycomb?
Someone’s been reading facebook. My house mate turned me onto it, she bought some honeycomb from a market a few weeks back and I asked her what the hell we do with that…she said cheese (Cheddar)…I said shudyup! Then I tried some…..sold!!!

6. You have an impressive list of awards to your name like being voted number 1 breaks DJ at the PDMA’s numerous times. Which one has been your greatest achievement?
I’m very grateful and quite humbled to have been acknowledged by my peers over the years but I never set out to achieve any awards I just wanted to make music my life, to be immersed in it, day and night. Being able to do that is definitely my greatest achievement.

7. What was the first record you bought?
I think it was a Reactivate compilation…the green one with the crab on it.. Reactivate 10 I think.

8. What equipment do you have and use at home?
Just a pair of 1200s and a simple mixer. Since I started buying more digital music I haven’t been able to mix at home but I’ve just got onto Traktor Scratch Pro so after 2 years I can finally mix at home again. Loving it!

9. Who is your biggest musical influence?
My Mum

10. What/Who inspired you to start DJ’ing?
I never really set out to become a DJ, I just fell into a group of mates who were DJs and we put on parties together, it was just something that I loved doing, loved the music and loved rocking out on the dance floor all night. One day one of them asked if I wanted to have a go, I picked it up pretty quickly and everything went from there.

11. I’ve heard you have some “passionate” fans… ever been mailed anything weird?
Not mailed, but I’ve had a few interesting requests.

12. What DJ have you met that turned you into a tongue tied stuttering silly billy?
I’m pretty susceptible to getting all star struck and turning into the stuttering idiot around people I’m a big fan of. The first time I met Lee Rous from Plump DJs I didn’t know what to say as he gave me a huge complement on one of my sets, I kinda just stood there with this stupid grin on my face and blinked allot. It’s funny as Lee has become a good mate over the years and I’ve joked about it with him since.

13. Vinyl or Digital ?
Both

14. You’ve start producing in the last few years with some great success already. How’s that going at the moment? Any new releases to watch out for?
It’s going good thanks, been working on some new stuff on my own and knocking out a bit of stuff with Philly which is sounding really good. Release wise I’ve just done a remix of a Jono Fernendez tune which should be coming out on Bam Bam Muzik very soon.

15. Your co-produced track “Scrambler” is licensed to TV Show CSI: NY... how did this come about?
The label Passenger that Scrambler got signed to pushed it with their publishing company, the music director of CSI liked it I guess so they picked it up. If you’ve seen the scene it was used in it features a girl running around town trying to find somewhere to go to the toilet. Maybe they felt it had that kind of vibe.

16. Tell me about the first time you played out?
It was at a rave I put on with some friends of mine in Gnangara pine forest in about 97. I didn’t put myself on the bill cos I didn’t really think I was good enough to rate a mention and to say I was nervous was an understatement. Luckily it was early in the night before too many people had turned up so I didn’t throw up in my shoes.

17. Do you have a message for the bedroom DJ’s out there?
What ever you do don’t stop, keep playing, keep mixing and keep loving the music. When it comes to getting gigs and playing out, the best way to get a gig is put it on yourself, find a bar, pub, shed, what ever and put on your own night, it’s great experience and you can be guaranteed that you’ll get a good slot.

18. Where can the Perth punters see you play?
Fridays at The Beat Suite @ The Flying Scotsman
Saturdays at Ambar
Villa nightclub, guest spots around Perth and many of the festivals over summer.

19. What are you doing after you finish this interview?
Heading to a comedy night.

20. Open mic - 25 words or less.....
Big Love!
