Alex M.O.R.P.H Interview

Alex MORPH is a man on a mission. Purple Audio, Alex’s debut artist album may only be about to hit the sound waves but he is far from unknown. Broadcasting to some 30 countries throughout the world every week on his radio show, HeavensGate, Alex has carved a heavy name amongst the trance masses. David Minutillo tracked down the man with the goatee to find out exactly what he’s all about…

It seems every DJ worth his salt is taking up residence in Germany, what do you think is the big draw card about the place?
Germany has always been a pioneer in electronic dance music; a lot of the stuff has its roots here or has set the right impulses for its development. That’s because of the talented and creative artists, and also a lot of technical inventions were born here (synthesizers, software, etc). Germany has a long dance music history and culture.

What has been the most exciting remix you have been asked to do?
Pheewww, hard question! I have done so many remixes so far, it's almost impossible to name just one as the "most exciting", as many of them have been exciting and challenging!

Your work seems to cross paths with Paul van Dyk a lot, what is your relationship with him like?
We're really cool! We developed a good friendship and respect each other as artists. He's a full on professional when it comes to music and it's always interesting to talk with him about the scene, the business, and productions. He's truly a unique personality in dance music.

What kind of sounds can we expect from your debut album Purple Audio?
The album doesn’t contain 100% Trance, but of course it has the typical uplifting M.O.R.P.H. sound on board. There are also breakbeats, slower songs and I even produced a song with a rockier edge.

Can you explain the purple thing, is it simply a favourite colour or is there something deeper to it?
There‘s more behind it. I love to draw in my free time. Actually almost every picture at my home‘s walls has been drawn by myself. And what I love, is the purple colour. It‘s so strong and sharp, but still gentle, warm and beautiful.  It‘s the colour of the year - you cannot escape purple in 2009. It‘s in fashion, in art, everywhere. So, I wanted to combine two things that I love, which normally don‘t have a lot to do with each other: music + colour = Purple Audio. In the end, the album artwork shows another great interpretation of the album title. Just look at it, and you‘ll understand! I love the expression of the cover design!

Do you often know when you are putting something together in the studio that it is going to be a winner on the dance floor before you actually play it out?
You have a feeling mostly, but you can never be sure! You play it loud in the car or in the studio and it sounds great, but sometimes it's totally different in a full club, plus it depends on the mood and on the right time. A good track cannot work every time, this is an important rule. But mostly when I have a good feeling on a track, it also comes out great in the club, thank god, haha!

It seems like you aren’t a name in Trance until you broadcast your own radio show, does that make HeavensGate a rite of passage for you and Woody?
It's an important platform, of course! We're broadcasted worldwide, so it reaches a LOT of people who can learn about us and the music this way. You can do tons of good productions and remixes, but you need the tools to reach the people and to present your music. And HeavensGate is our weekly connection to our fans worldwide.

Where do you see the international trance scene heading?
Nobody knows, but it will be definitely interesting to see the further development of Trance. I think there will be 3 main categories (harder, cooler, and energetic melodic), but there's always time for surprises that can change a lot.

Besides yourself, who do you think are the names to watch out for this year in the world of electronic music?
Not easy to name them all, because there are a lot of good producers out there, new ones and usual suspects as well, who keep delivering quality. So, it's hard to name names!

You have toured down under before, any chance of seeing you over in Perth in the future?
I really hope so! I love Australia! But it's always up to the promoters, club owners and fans who want to see me. However, I have been down under twice now, so I see good chances to visit you again in the future!
